Since 2002 the new bascule bridge connects the regions Angeln and Schwansen. Once every hour at “quarter to” the bridge opens to let ships pass. Especially when the weather is good a lot of boats are waiting to pass during the bridge opening.
With its variety of stores and restaurants the harbor side promenade invites to stay and enjoy a day by the riverside. Here daily excursions e.g. to Schleimunde or Schleswig start. Furthermore traditional sailing boats regularly anchor by the pier.
For more than 600 years the herring fence is in its place now. The last from over 40 of those fences in Schlei river, and even the last in Europe, this fence is still fully functioning. Every year in herring season it comes to full use for catching plenty of fish.
St. Nikolai Church
In late baroque style the church was built from 1789 to 1793. Having space for 1200 visitors not only services but musical events are regularly held in St. Nikolai Church.
The former garner now became a hotel with 14 rooms. The rooms are furnished in a maritime style and offer a unique view to the Schlei. On the ground floor the Pierspeicher restaurant with a large, sunny outside terrace, inviting to stay, is located.
The 2005 newly created harbor in Kappeln has 35 berths for guests. Especially in the summertime the harbor is highly frequented. From Pierspeicher guesthouse you can enjoy the unique view to the yacht harbor.
